LA SELVA - A great jungle experience

Location:
Located in the heart of the Amazon basin of Ecuador, about 60 miles down the Napo River (one of the main tributaries of the Amazon) from Coca and one mile in land from the river itself.  Coca is used as the starting point for all tours, be it the Coca airport (for flights from Quito) or the Coca bus terminal (for those arriving by land).
Description:
Situated on the edge of a lake in the heart of primary forest, along the Rio Napo, this lodge won the Ecotourism Award at the World Congress on Tourism and the Environment years before many other lodges were even giving responsible tourism a thought.  The lodge provides guided tours of the rainforest with trained Naturalist guides and Native assistants.  However, there are many other options available and you can create your own itinerary, including swimming, fishing, bird-watching or simple relaxing.

The lodge is perched above the forest floor on stilts and connected with raised walkways.  The thatched-roofed bamboo bungalows are the perfect setting for exploring the wonders of the pristine nature.  The cabins are located on a hill overlooking Garazcocha Lake - a private, 100% natural lake where only guests have access.Guests are divided into groups of no more than 8, according to the interests.  La Selva has a total capacity for 44 visitors, in the following cabins:
  • 12 Double cabins (with twin beds)
  • 1 Single cabin (one double bed)
  • 1 Triple cabin (three single beds)
  • 1 Quadruple cabin (one double bed & two single beds)
  • 1 Family cabin (one double bed & 5 single beds)
Activities:
There are numerous activities and options to enjoy include:

  • Walk to Silverio's House (2 to 3 hour hike through mainly primary forest passing huts of indigenous neighbours along the Napo River)
  • Mandicocha Trail (an easy trail filled with wildlife)
  • Mandicocha-Mandiyacu (3 to 4 hour trip that includes a 90 minute trip in paddle canoes)
  • El Salado (2 hour excursion combined with a picnic lunch for a possibility to see parrots, parakeets & macaws in their thousands)
  • Piliche Trail (see enormous colony of leafcutter ants)
  • Night excursions (canoe & walking trips to see such wildlife as caiman, monkeys, insects & owls)
  • 135-foot Observation Tower (a bird's-eye view of the surroundings)
  • Butterfly Farm (close to the lodge, watch & photograph butterflies at close range)
  • Ruth's Trail (a good place to look for jaguars)
